Biltwell Gringo Review
If you've been into motorcycles for any amount of time, you're probably familiar with the Biltwell Gringo - a clean, classic retro-inspired helmet from Biltwell. The first thing you’ll notice about the Gringo is it’s super simplistic styling. You won’t find any extra venting except for the eyeport and there’s no extensive list of features for it. It’s currently available in about 8 different colorways along with a few Limited Edition designs. The color we highlighted in our video is the Baja Blue.

The main selling point of the Gringo helmet is it’s styling and affordable price, which starts out at about $160. The Gringo was Biltwell’s first entry into the full-face market, where they were previously known for their ¾ lids. A real benefit that I found was the look, especially compared to a ¾ helmet. While I love the look of ¾ helmets, they just tend to sit up high and really give me a Mushroom-head look, where the Gringo fits really well and looks good at the same time.
Taking a look at the helmet, you’ll notice the 5 snaps around the eye port. Biltwell offers a 5-snap Blast Shield that you can add for some eye protection and you can even attach one of their 3-Snap bubble shields if you’d prefer. While that may be an option for some people, I prefer just wearing a pair of sun-glasses, or opting for some Moto Goggles. One thing to note is that the opening is just a tad small for some goggles, so it might take a little finessing to get the goggles in-place.
The construction of the Gringo is an ABS outer shell, with a shock-absorbing EPS inner shell. It meets DOT safety standards and the size Medium we have here weighed in at 2lb 11oz and it’s available in sizes XS through 2XL.
The interior of the helmet has a very nice, hand-stitched comfort liner with some foam padding. You’ll also notice the chin pad of the helmet has some diamond stitching on it, which is a really nice, custom touch. The interior is removable, and it’s comprised of the cheek pads, and the one-piece comfort liner. The Helmet liner can be washed and re-used, and Biltwell offers some replacement liners as well if yours gets a little grungy over time.
When riding around with the Gringo, you’ll find that it has a similar feel and comfort level to that of a ¾ helmet. It has a fairly open and unobstructed bottom, so you’ll get a good bit of airflow and some wind noise at higher speeds, but that’s to be expected. There was no surprises with it, and the helmet felt solid and stayed in-place while on the highway. Overall it was definitely a comfortable helmet.
For the money, the Biltwell Gringo is definitely hard to beat, especially if you’re in the market for a classic-looking lid.
