Simpson Mod Bandit Helmet - Closer look at Simpson's New Modular
Simpson announced back in October 2018 they would be adding another game changing helmet to their already iconic line-up. Expectations were high since the brand has built a huge fan base around their distinctly styled Outlaw and Ghost Bandit helmets. Both lids have an aggressive style that resembles something you might find in a Star Wars movie.
The unveil of the Simpson Mod Bandit happened at the AIMExpo in Las Vegas, NV. Simpson released it in the Matte Black finish with a promise of more colors and shield options to follow. Now just after the New Year, we have received shipment of the Matte Black, Gloss Black and Gloss White colors. We were excited to check it out and see if this modular was going to live up to the hype and brand expectations.
So first off, yes it’s totally a modular helmet.
Simpson took the aggressive lines of the Ghost Bandit and incorporated them into a modular lid that weighs in at only 3lbs 5oz that is both DOT and ECE Rated. Light compared to most modulars on the market.
The vents and overall style of the helmet mask the lines of the chin bar that are usually obvious on modular style helmets. As far as venting goes, it has two intake vents on the top of the helmet that can be shut if needed and 6 rear exhaust vents – two on the top, four on the bottom. On the chin bar you will find six “whisker” vents (3 on either side) and two front slits that have a chrome mesh covering – a pretty cool styling point.
The Mod Bandit comes equipped with a dark smoke drop down visor that does an excellent job at providing full coverage from sun light. The slider to operate the drop down is located just behind the shield mount/hinge and is fairly easy to find and operate with gloves on. It does have a slight resistance to it, which prevents the visor from dropping down unexpectedly should you ride over a bump.
Simpson has released 6 shield colors to choose from: Clear, Amber, Dark Smoke, Gold – Chrome and Iridium are expected to be in stock mid-late February. When you do decide to change the shield – but sure to check the instructions – but seriously it’s ridiculously simple and quick. The design of the shield allows you to open and close it easily because of the extra lip on the left slide.
The modular aspect of the helmet is well hidden by the design and shape of the Mod Bandit. The latch to open the chin bar is located just under the front lip of the helmet. It has a large enough gap so that you could still easily open it if you are wearing gloves – it might be tight if you are wearing thicker cold weather gloves.
And lastly, a very popular question for modular helmets is will it work with a communication system. And the answer is yes, I think Simpson would have been crazy to not include this as part of the design. The Mod Bandit features plenty of room for wires, ear pockets and speakers. Coming in at the $479.95 price point, you get a whole lot of helmet plus bones styling points.
